This essay examines the 2017 revival of David Lynch and Mark Frost's seminal surrealist soap opera series - Twin Peaks - as a launching pad for discussing the push that contemporary Hollywood and peak television have made towards VFX photo-realism, and how Twin Peaks largely subverts this trend by leaning towards lo-fi stylization that is both detached from realism and enacts a critique towards the pursuit of it.
